(and I do like your story, even if I haven't caught up in a while) Your comment inspired me to finally getting around to reviewing "Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS".

"Name of the Doctor" does sort of pay off the idea of Clara being a totally generic companion by sort of redefining companion as "Clara, basically." It's sort of clever, but I don't think giving Clara some defining characteristics would have invalidated the idea. Or, to put it another way, I wouldn't have had a problem with, say, Sarah Jane been given the "Name of the Doctor" bit instead.JJ Gauthierhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15795222927328657004noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4054760655498332291.post-48505920082492147962013-06-02T23:06:53.768-05:002013-06-02T23:06:53.768-05:00Hi, JJ. Well called).

Regarding Clara. The approach taken toward depicting Clara is something of the opposite employed for Sarah Jane or Rose. The presentation of Sarah Jane or Rose was designed to be informing of the aspects most relevant to involvement with the character, up front and in reasonably short order. Beyond the aspects most relevant to involvement with the plots at hand (fear for example), the rate and extent of Clara's depiction was subject to the mechanics of the relevant plot and development arcs. Tricky business with steep trade offs; I have to say I prefer the depiction more up front where it concerns a regular companion, at least when it comes to getting a rounded sense of the personality of the character. That's oversimplified, but hopefully you get what I mean. I do like her anyway though and the acting is excellent.

The production these days is amazing. In fact it can get too flashy for my humble, but in this episode I thought it was fantastic. Effectively atmospheric. I think you've been "on the money" about the writing, especially the pacing/development problems of shoehorning too much into too little time. This story benefited from being more focused and better suited for its length than most of late.

Anyway, I find myself in more agreement with your reviews than anyone else's, by and large. Thought I'd drop in to chat and offer an encouraging word.
TSTime Spectatorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16959120838408503531noreply@blogger.com
